How it Works
What’s the basic philosophy behind GFM Rapid Medical Weight Loss?
The doctors at Gill Family Medicine know that obesity is a chronic disease that results in serious health problems. The majority of programs result in temporary weight loss and frustration for most people. Our customized weight loss program is based on years of experience and follows established guidelines by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. The program is administered by our doctors and registered dietician and is designed to help people reach a healthy weight and maintain it for life.
How does the GFM Rapid Medical Weight Loss Program work?
GFM Rapid Medical Weight Loss is a low carbohydrate program. It works by ketosis. Most people experience a condition called ketosis when they go on a low carbohydrate diet allowing the body to live off fat. In other words, the body becomes a more efficient fat burner. The program is structured in three phases over a 12 week period: Quick Start, Transition, and Maintenance. Every person is unique so education, activity, energy injections, and medications are prescribed based on your particular goals and needs.
How much weight will I lose with the GFM Rapid Medical Weight Loss Program?
Most people experience a loss of 1 to 2 pounds a day the first week. Weight loss may range from ½ to 3 pounds per week after the first week. Each person is unique and different strategies can be used to optimize weight loss for every person. If you have more than 40 pounds to lose, you can go through the 12 week program, take a break, and then repeat another series.
Who is a candidate for this Rapid Weight Loss?
The majority of men and women who are 18 years of age or older can participate in this method of weight loss. You will have blood work, an EKG, and a medical evaluation to determine if you are a candidate before starting the program. Women who are pregnant or nursing cannot participate. People who are currently in treatment for cancer cannot participate.
Is the GFM Rapid Medical Weight Loss Program safe?
The program is carefully administered under the direction of our physicians and registered dietician. Each person is monitored weekly for any problems or concerns. Not only has this program been found to be safe, but can also be very effective in reducing or even eliminating medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, edema, joint pain, and others. The goal of medical weight loss is to improve each person’s overall health, wellness, and appearance.
How is this program different from other weight loss programs?
Our weight loss program is physician-supervised. Our experienced doctors can treat your weight within the context of your total health profile. Because of this they have tools and resources that other programs do not, such as the ability to adjust medications hindering your weight loss progress. Second, our program does not focus on just one aspect of weight loss. We take a comprehensive approach that includes food, exercise, and behavioral modification. Weight loss and weight maintenance must become a way of life and we teach you how. Our doctors and staff will be there to support you every step of the way in achieving and maintaining your goals.
What kinds of foods can I eat on the program?
Each phase of the program provides a food plan based on daily calories. In the Quick Start and Transition phases of the program, your doctor will prescribe a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD), which consists of highly nutritional foods to keep you healthy and balanced as you experience weight loss. As you move toward your weight loss goal and incorporate healthier behaviors into your lifestyle, you will begin to introduce more of your favorite foods into your daily plan with the doctor’s guidance. The goal is to help you achieve life-long maintenance while enjoying foods you eat.
Do I have to exercise on the program?
While there is no requirement for exercise, research consistently shows that exercise increases the likelihood of maintaining a healthy weight… and not regaining weight lost. The program will offer activity recommendations based on your body composition and physical abilities. We have made special arrangements for our patients to have discounts with a local fitness facility and personal trainer to maximize their success.
Do I have to take weight loss medication?
There is no medication requirement. However, if you consent, your doctor can prescribe a safe appetite suppressant to keep hunger at bay as you lose weight. Your doctor can also adjust any current medications you might be taking for another condition during the program.
I really only want to lose 15 pounds. Can this plan work for me?
At your initial consultation, the physician will be able to discuss which plan is best suited for you. The decision on which program is right for you is made based on your age, medical conditions and personal goals. Our goal is to find the plan that will work the best and be the most effective based on your individual needs.
What happens after I lose the weight?
After reaching your goal, each person is highly encouraged to enter the Maintenance Phase of the program. Experience has shown that people who continue in the program are much more successful in maintaining their weight and improving their overall wellness. Each person has the choice of continuing weekly or monthly visits designed to ensure that you continue healthy eating. Appetite suppressants and energy injections may be continued based on individual needs.
Does my insurance cover the cost of this Weight Loss Program?
While insurance does not cover the cost of the program, GFM Rapid Medical Weight Loss offers a variety of payment options. You may use your Health Savings Account. We also offer the option of a medical credit card through General Electric’s Care Credit Program, which allows for payments with no interest. We also accept credit cards, debit cards, and cash.
